Rawhider Leathers was established in 1978 by my
parents Greg and Della Arana. The name Rawhider was taken by my father since he
would purchase the raw, green hides from local slaughter houses around New
Mexico then sell them to tanneries.
Greg and Della came in contact with a
local organization who were affiliated with the
National Buck Skinners Association.
Being the creative people that they are, Greg with his talent of making tack,
ropes and braiding and Della, an excellent seamstress and combined their efforts
and began creating early 1840 era buckskin clothing, bags, and moccasins along
with a variety of other items. They became and still are active members of the
American Mountain Man Association.
They began traveling to Mountain Man
Rendezvous around the country to sell their goods. There they met people from
all walks of life and made friends whose friendships they will treasure
forever. Their custom made leather goods have been sold and traded all over the
USA and are renowned for their handmade quality.
Over the years my mother and father taught
me all the different aspects of their business. They have instilled in my
children and me the art of taking something undesirable and creating something
beautiful and useful. My parents have since retired and left the business in my
care. We will continue this legacy with great pride and respect for them.
Rawhider Leathers will continue producing quality leather work as it has from
the beginning.
Respectfully,
Debbie Arana Wheeler
